Natural Living Monday #15 ~ Brussel Sprouts With Toasted Pecans, Balsamic and Parm

Brussel sprouts are tiny cute little members of the cabbage family and when I was a kid, I hated them!  But now I love them and so do my own kids, which I think is pretty cool.  Here is a tasty recipe for making your brussels sprouts and eating them too.

Ingredients ~ measurements are not exact and don't need to be... follow your intuition and taste buds on this one!

  • 1 to 2 pounds of brussel sprouts, washed, trimmed and halved
  • 2 to 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • olive oil
  • about a 1/3 cup of pecan halves roughly chopped
  • balsamic vinegar
  • parmesan cheese
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions ~  Coat the bottom of a nice big pan with olive oil, lightly saute the garlic for a minute or so.  Place the brussel sprouts cut side down in the olive oil and roast the brussel sprouts slowly over medium low eat until they start to become dark and caramely.  Flip and cook on the other side until the brussel sprouts begin to soften and re acooked through, season with salt and pepper to taste.

tiny

Mean while place the pecans in another pan and slowly toast over low heat until the nuts become fragrant and toasty brown colored, stirring often.

Next toss the nuts and brussel sprouts together.

Finally, I highly recommend topping with a generous drizzle of sweet balsamic vinegar and some parmesan cheese.  This is seriously tasty!  I hope you enjoy it should you decide to embark on this cooking adventure.

Natural Living Monday #14 ~ A Gift Of Health

The perfect gift of knowledge and beauty for anyone interested in herbal knowledge and healthy living!

Have you heard of Rosemary Gladstar?  Read any of her books?  She is an absolutely amazing herbalist, simply inspiring in a nourishing love filled kinda way.  Her books are infused with a plethora of knowledge that is easy to understand and relate too.  Her beautiful book, Family Herbal, A Guide to Living Life With Energy, Health and Vitality is no exception.  Filled with lovely pictures, stories and herbal tips this book is a great introduction to the world of herbs while also being a valuable resource for those more experienced with plant medicine.  Broken down into chapters for every member of the family this book has wonderful ideas for addressing everyone's needs.  There are also sections brimming with ideas for healthy eating, help with stress, body care recipes and remedies for times when we need a bit of herbal help such as during a cold or flu.

Rosemary also includes a materia medica section complete with many favorite and useful plants as well as a section on making herbal medicines.  Through out the book you will find beloved wonderful recipes from Rosemary to try in your own home like:

  • Rosemary's Perfect Cream
  • Longevity Tonic and Chai
  • Chamomile Tisane
  • Energy Balls

Her recipes are easy to follow and produce wonderful medicines.  She often provides the reader with special little tips for medicine making success.

This is truly one of my favorite books.  Full of inspiration and wisdom, it is a delight to read and use.

Natural Living Monday #13

Good Monday Morning! Are you looking for gifts for a special child in your life to give during the upcoming holiday season?  Something homemade that inspires the imagination?  Something that gives kids hands on experience with herbs?

Play dough, need I say more?

Maybe it is just me and my obsession with the stuff.  I do seem to talk about it a lot and make it often.  But in my opinion, play dough is really one of the best homemade gifts for little kids.  By adding herbs and essential oils to play dough kids get to experience herbs in an up close and personal way.  I find that they absolutely love it!  I smile every year when I make up a big batch of Christmas play dough to send off in the mail to all the sweet young ones in my life and of course I always make extra for my own kids to play with, though this year they seem less interested.  So sad, I guess they are growing up!

Last night we made up a special batch to send off.  We used lots of fun things to make it smell and sparkle like the Holidays.

Things Like....

  • ground cinnamon, copious amounts
  • ground cloves
  • beet root powder  for color
  • pink rose petals
  • orange essential oil
  • lots of different colors of glitter (this part is not so environmental... ah well...)

Once it was all cooked up and had cooled off we portioned it into plastic bags to keep it fresh and then wrapped it with sparkly tissue paper.  This will make a fun addition to gifts we send off in the mail!  Check out my post on Herbal Play Dough for the recipe to make your own play dough.

Natural Living Monday #12

Good Monday Morning! I wanted to start off this week's wonderful blog hop with a little herbal tidbit about one of my favorite herbs to use with kids, roses!  Of course Summer is a wonderful time to collect and use fresh rose petals yet even during the cold of Winter we can enjoy the bounty of roses by using dried petals and fruits (hips).  Roses are great for supporting immunity and lung health.  They bring a ray of happiness to folks feeling sad in the during gloomy months of late Winter.  Plus they are great for crafting with!

Rose Petals and Hips

Rosa spp.

Roses, in their beauty, open the heart and speak of love.  Yet they offer so much more than meets the eye.  The petals are edible and are lovely added to salads, desserts and even made into rose butter.  They also make a tasty tea (use fresh or dried) that I have found to be quite popular with children.  All that deliciousness brings with it immune enhancing properties as well as soothing coolness for the urinary system, nervous system and heart.  The petals ease cold and flu symptoms and lung congestion increasing lung strength and vitality.  Roses are also helpful in cases of pms and fullness in the pelvis.  Emotionally roses sooth broken hearts and aggravated nervous systems.  Rose hips, the fruit of a rose, are very high in Vitamin C.  They make a tasty sweet sour addition to teas and foods helping to prevent infections.  I love to soak the hips in apple juice until they are soft and use them as jam on my kids' PB & J.

Be sure to use organic roses that have not been sprayed!

Roses are often heavily sprayed so be sure to use organic roses.
