Nightmares And Night Terros, What’s A Mama To Do?

It’s the middle of the night and after a long day you are finally sound asleep when across the vast land of dreams you hear a wail or feel a tug on your blanket.  As you rouse yourself back to the waking world it begins to dawn upon you that, yes, there is a noise or a presence nearby.  Then jerking fully awake a small frightened child greets you with a terrified need to be calmed and comforted.

Sound familiar?  Many kids (and their parents) suffer from nightmares and night terrors.  From my experience it can be a single incident or happen over many nights while the child is working through what ever is bothering them. Over the years both of my kids have had bouts of insomnia often accompanied by nightmares and even, at times, night terrors.  I have tried many things to help them.  Often the most important thing is helping them figure out what is causing them stress and then to guide them on working through their feelings.   When a child is having repeat nightmares it is also really important to look at what influences are in their lives.  Are they watching scary shows?  Is something happening at school that is bothering them?  Are they about to make a big transition in their life?  Or has something changed recently in their life?  When one of my kids was getting ready to start kindergarten she began having night terrors.  During the day we took time to talk about her fears and her excitement.  We also took some precautionary steps before bed at night to help her get a better sleep.  Ultimately her night terrors completely stopped once school started but the steps we took in the mean time helped to lessen her fears.

Here are some of our most successful night-time strategies and helpers.

Journaling And Drawing Pictures

Happy Before Bed

A happy picture drawn before bed. Mommy and V in the sun with rain for taking care of the flower. After V finished this picture she went to sleep with a huge smile on her face and slept peacefully the whole night through.

When something is really bothering my kids I always encourage them to express their feelings.  Write about it or draw a picture!  Both of my kids have journals by their beds with writing and drawing implements.  Give your child a special journal just for their dreams and night-time thoughts.  Encourage them to get what ever is in their head bothering them down on paper.  They can also use their journal to write/draw about things they love and that make them happy.  This will help set the tone for a nice sleep by allowing them to go to sleep with good happy energy.

Flower Essences

Flower essences are extremely gentle and wonderful for helping people on an emotional, mental and spiritual level.

Rescue Remedy ~

Dr. Edward Bach originally discovered and formulated the first 38 flower essences.  Well known and beloved by many, Rescue Remedy is a blend of five of the original flower essences.  It is powerful during times of emotional crisis.   I have found that it works great for kids suffering from nightmares and night terrors.  My favorite way to administer Rescue Remedy to kids is with a nice simple massage.  Put a few drops of Rescue Remedy in your hand, let it warm for a moment and then rub gently into the child’s feet* or lower back*.  This almost always sends my little ones right off to dream land.  You can do this before bed or when comforting a child in the night.  Adding a few drops of Rescue Remedy to the child’s bedside water-glass is also an easy effective way to ease fears through the night.

Other flower essences to consider ~

  • St. John’s Wort is helpful very sensitive people and brings about a sense of protection and light, indicated where the is a feeling of psychic attack.
  • Chamomile eases build-up of tension during the course of the day which can result in nightmares and restless sleep.
  • Peony helps folks who are influenced by “negative tendencies [and are] tense and fearful.”

This wonderful information is taken largely from “Flower Power” by Anne McIntyre. The study of flower essences is vast.  If they appeal to you I highly recommend delving into this amazing field with a good bit of research.

Monster Spray/Sweet Dreams Spray

Sleepy Time Spray

Make a “monster spray” with your child to keep by their bedside.  Encourage them use the spray when they are scared.  You can also spray it around their room before you leave for night either to scare away the monsters and make a safe, happy place for sleeping full of light and love (saying this out loud while you are spraying the spray helps engage the child and comfort them).   If you think your child will be scared by the idea of a monster spray because it might confirm to them that monsters are in fact real, you can call it something else like sweet dreams spray or sleepy time spritzer.  My youngest was sure that monsters were real so the “monster spray” worked really well for her.  We made it with essential oils she picked out that she found comforting and she knew scared away monsters.  More than once I found her asleep in her bed with the spray bottle clutched in her tiny little hand.

For complete instructions on making your own monster spray visit Aromatherapy Spritzers under How To Use Herbs.  Let your child make their new spray extra powerful by having them decorating a label for the bottle.

Be sure to choose mild essential oils that promote sleep, ease stress/anxiety and appeal to your child.

Some suggested oils ~

  • lavender
  • cedarwood
  • sweet orange
  • ylang ylang
  • vetivert
  • sandalwood
  • cardamom
  • frankincense
  • rose geranium
  • clary sage

Please Note:  If your child is very small and may get into the spray or otherwise misuse it, please store it up out of their reach when you are not in the room with them.  Essential oils are not safe to use internally.

Happy Night Tea (a.k.a Sunshine Tea)

Pot of Tea

We love this blend at our house for times of stress and exhaustion, it is especially helpful for kids to sip before bed.  St. John’s Wort seems to give an extra bit of protection from nightmares while greatly reducing stress.  Chamomile is very gentle and relaxing for kids.  While the lavender just gives the a little special soothing nervine boost.

Combine equal parts of chamomile and St. John’s Wort with the lavender, about 1 tablespoon of each herb per cup of water.  Cover with boiling water and a lid to keep in all the yummy therapeutic essential oils.  Steep for 3 to 6 minutes, no longer.  Strain and add honey to taste.  My kids love it with Lemon Balm Honey!

Other Night Time Teas ~

There are so many wonderful choices when it comes to choosing bed time tea herbs for kids and these herbs/blends are a few of my family’s favorites.  All of them are great for relaxation and easing little bodies to sleep.

  • Lemon Balm is particularly helpful for kids that are emotionally wound-up and over excited.
  • Chamomile all by itself, is a great herb for kids especially for kids with emotional tummy upset.
  • Rose is wonderful for soothing nervousness especially if there is a sense of grief involved.
  • My kids also love Sleepy Time, Tension Tamer and Honey Vanilla Chamomile from Celestial Seasonings.

Foot Massage*

tooties

Who doesn’t like a good foot rub?  A nice rub is especially relaxing before bed.  You can further enhance the relaxing effect by rubbing essential oils or balms into the feet.  Our bodies are able to absorb a phenomenal amount through the skin on the bottom of our feet.  In fact an old remedy for coughs is to put rub the bottom of the feet with olive oil, put minced garlic on top of the oil and then put socks over the whole thing.  Within a very short amount of time the person’s breath will smell of garlic!  The garlic then helps to fight infection from the inside of the lungs out as the person breathes.

So, putting something nice on the feet before bed gives the person a lovely dose of healing.  I like to rub a couple drops of lavender essential on my kids feet if they need help sleeping.  Always be sure to dilute the essential oil in a carrier oil like olive oil or coconut. Other essential oils to consider are ~

  • cedarwood
  • ylang ylang
  • vetivert
  • sandalwood
  • frankincense
  • rose geranium

Coffea Cruda

Coffea Cruda is a homeopathic remedy which is good for insomnia with racing thoughts like the mind is going a mile a minute.  Both of my kids and I have found relief from disturbing thoughts at bedtime and during the night by taking this remedy.

*In Traditional Chinese Medicine the Kidneys are associated with the emotion of Fear and they govern the feet.

Sweet Dreams!

A Sniffle and a Sneeze…

When I hear “a sniffle and a sneeze” coming from one of my kids, my brain starts to spin with questions about what action if any I should take in regards to the sounds/signs their body is making.

“Is V getting sick or did she just inhale a bit of something that is making her sneeze?”

“N has coughed five times this morning, how is she doing?”

I try not to be an alarmist because I know the innate vitally of my kids is strong and that they will  be fine.  And further, that sometimes, we need to be sick.  We need a break and that is ok too.

Everyone has their own protocol for how to help their sick kid.  For my family I do try to catch things early if I can.  I have a general idea of what my kids’ normal is….  how does their tongue normally look?  Are their eye’s sparkly and their cheeks rosy?  What does the temperature of their skin usually feel like when they wake up?  I pay attention as best I can and when things begin to look/feel a bit off, I take measures to help them right away.  I start to give my kids things from the following list right away.  This is my first line of defense for my kids.  If a cold or flu settles in we move on to other remedies.

This is what I have found works well for my kids and my family.

  • Elderberry Syrup ~ Check out my previous entry on info for how to use elderberry.
  • Catnip Tea ~ When my kids need catnip tea, they suck it down like soda pop.  Great right before bed to aid sleep and fight infections.  Brew one tablespoon in a big cup of just boiled water for 10 minutes.  You might want to sweeten it with honey or agave.
  • St. John’s Wort/ Lemon Balm Tea ~ Blend together a small handful of each, cover with just boiled water and steep for at least 20 minutes.  Great antivirals and relaxants.
  • Umcka ~  I found this product recently.  All I can say, is that it really works!  My kids love the taste of the syrup so it is really easy to give it to them.
  • Vitamin D ~  Wonderful for prevention during the winter months.  Check out this video from one of my amazing teachers, Paul Bergner, for info about using vitamin D.
  • Essential Oils ~ Lavender, Ravensara, Eucalyptus.  Use them in the bath and in a humidifier, both of these are great.  But my favorite is to dilute a couple of drops of essential oil in a bit of veggie oil and use this mixture to give my child (or myself) a nice firm foot massage before bed.  Follow up with snuggly socks and sweet dreams.
  • Homemade Soup ~ Chicken is my favorite with lots of veggies, garlic and mushrooms
  • Increase Liquids ~ Lots and lots, really anything they will drink as long as it is not sugary, though I will give them diluted juice, if that is all they will drink
  • Hot Apple Cider ~ Speaking of juice…  I make this with diluted apple juice, cinnamon chips and fresh ginger.  I just combine about a cup of juice, a cup of water, an inch or so of chopped ginger and a tablespoon of cinnamon chips in a pan.  Simmer for at least 20 minutes and serve.  Warming, immunostimulating and yummy!
  • Oscillococcinum ~ for flu exposure.  My homeopathic friend told me that taking a third of the tube through out the day is the best way to take it rather then taking the whole remedy at once.
  • Eliminate ~ refined sugar, dairy, and citrus.
  • Promote Rest
  • Love ~ the most important part!
  • For Parents  ~ Raw Garlic is great.  I mince it up with a bit of salt and add it to whatever we are eating or putting it on a piece of toast with olive oil.  Everything else above is great for mom and dad too.

Note ~ There are a lot of wonderful products on the market for helping us to stay healthy.   When the above measures don’t stop illness in its tracks, I move on to Wish Garden Herbs formulations, they have some wonderful formulations for both kids and adults.  All of their products are amazing.  I have tried many for myself, my kids and recommended them often with consistent wonderful feedback.   My favorites for kids are their Ear Combo for ear infections.  I keep this one on hand.  It is really effective and helpful when you are awakened in the middle of the night by a kid in pain.  Also, their Kick-It products and Cold Season Symptoms are wonderful.  I had many parents give me rave reviews about  the Cold Season remedy when I worked retail.

What do you do to keep yourself and your family healthy?  I am always looking for great tips and suggestions!

Elderberry for Winter Health

Elderberry

Nature has blessed us with so much.  Looking to Nature we can find a multitude of amazing plant allies that can help the whole family stay nourished and healthy
during the winter months.  A favorite is elder and its berries which have an extensive traditional use as a preventative for the flu and as a support during the flu.  In fact modern research has found elderberries to be active against the flu virus.  You can easily make a yummy syrup from elderberries to take on a regular basis during flu season.  This is something that most kids really enjoy taking which is a major plus!  If you don’t want to make your own syrup a ready-made preparation of elderberry named Sambucol can be purchased at most natural food stores.  And if despite your best efforts, sickness should take hold, syrups can be used during a bout of the flu to hasten healing.

We make the following easy delicious recipe for syrup every year.

~ Elderberry Syrup ~
  • One cup of fresh or ½ cup of dried elderberries
  • 1 to 2 tsp of whole cloves (use less if you are using ground cloves)
  • 1 to 3 tsp of cinnamon chips (use less if you are using ground cinnamon)
  • 1 inch of fresh ginger root, chopped
  • the peel of one organic orange
  • 3/4 cup of raw unprocessed honey which acts as a preservative and enhances flavor
  • 3 cups of water
Directions:  Simmer the elderberries and spices in 3 cups of water.  Once the berries have softened smash up the berries and spices in the water.  This is a fun part to have children help with.  I use a potato masher and closely supervise my kids while the squish away to their hearts delight!  Cook at a low boil for about a ½ hour or until the liquid reduces by one-half.  Strain the mixture with a fine mesh strainer.  Make sure to get all the seeds out, which can be somewhat irritating to the digestive tract.  Return the liquid to the pot and add the honey.  Heat until the honey just melts.  Then bottle, label (include the date!) and refrigerate your new syrup.  It will keep in the refrigerator for about three months.  Take 2 to 3 teaspoons for adults and 1 teaspoon for children (ages 2 and up) 3 to 5 times a week as a prophylactic during flu season.  If you do happen to get sick with a bout of the flu take the same dosage about four times per day.  Only the blue elderberries (Sambucus nigra) should be used as the red ones are toxic.  Elderberries are generally considered to be quite safe though they can be drying and irritating for folks suffering from migraines.  If you have a reaction, stop taking it immediately.

simmering elderberry syrup

Make your syrup special

The spices included in this recipe not only make it taste delicious but also help to warm the body, decrease inflammation and support healthy digestion.  Other herbs can be added to this syrup to increase its protective properties.  Rose hips are soothing and will provide nourishing vitamin C and bioflavonoids.  Astragalus has long been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a tonic to the immune system particularly to prevent illness.  However, this herb should not be used during illness as it can drive infection deeper into the body.  So do not take astragalus  during the flu or cold.  A great herb for children’s health is lemon balm.  This yummy plant is antibacterial and antiviral, while also calming the digestive and easing nervous energy.  Add any of these herbs by the handful to the pot with the elderberries be sure to also add a little extra water during the simmering and a bit more honey.
Enjoy!
